Colin Montgomerie described his third-round four-over-par 74 as "very average" after his hopes of winning at Royal Birkdale were blown away. The Scot was eight over after two rounds, but five bogeys put paid to his chances, leaving him 12 over in the chase for his first major. "I was three over after seven and you can't see a way of getting back," said Montgomerie.

Considering that Microsoft has yet to be a real friend to open source I have to be at least a bit suspect of the intentions behind the sponsorship of the ongoing open source census. My guess? I think Microsoft wants access to the results both so it can understand open source but also so it can start to consider legal actions against the most popular products and the companies that develop them.

The biggest part of the release, however, is that it will be open source. Like Facebook's Thrift messaging protocol, Cisco's open sourcing of Etch probably has less to do with any corporate love for open source than with a realization that the most viable way to take on an incumbent in an established software market is with open source.
