Motorola fans rejoice! All both of you! Not only has Moto been making new phones (that don't resemble the Razr), but it's actually started to make some decent handsets again. We liked the Rokr E8 a lot last month and now Motorola's launching a new camera phone in partnership with Kodak, called the ZN5, which we got to fondle last week. Smart Rider combines the features of a phone and portable GPS device. Motorola broke a few molds when it announced the Smart Rider at CTIA this week. Smart Rider is a cross between a phone and a portable GPS device, using a 2.8-inch high-resolution screen for map display and turn-by-turn directions. It also has voice command and Bluetooth hands-free calling features.

The government is being urged to invest in a radio system developed during the Second World War, as a back-up to GPS satellite navigation. Loran is less vulnerable to jamming than GPS and could protect vital infrastructure after a terror attack, a committee of MPs was told.
