Central banks will pump billions of extra dollars into the banking system to ease the continuing credit drought. The co-ordinated move by the US Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank, is the latest effort to stimulate bank lending stymied by the credit crunch. Extra billions will be auctioned to banks in Europe and the US once every two weeks for an indefinite period.

The Federal Reserve has taken further steps to support banks struggling with liquidity shortages after admitting credit conditions were still strained. The US central bank will extend its loan programme to investment banks enabling firms to access cash quickly until next January. It will also increase the length of loans available to all banks from the current 28 days to 84 days.

WASHINGTON The Federal Reserve announced Thursday that it will make a third batch of short-term cash loans available to squeezed banks in June as part of its ongoing effort to ease stressed credit markets. The Fed will conduct three auctions in June, with each one making $75 billion available in short-term cash loans. Banks can bid for a slice of the available funds.
