Communities built up around Cape Canaveral figure to take a hobbling hit. There will be no more blastoffs by Atlantis, Discovery or Endeavour to pack hotels and viewing sites with tourists. Up to 6,400 of the 8,000 people who work as shuttle contractors in the area will lose their jobs, according to early NASA estimates. It's a radical economic change for the region, but not unprecedented.

If it doesn't impress you that Hyundai is about to bring its first rear-drive sedan to the U.S., starting under $30,000 and rising to $36,000 to $40,000-plus with the optional all-aluminum V-8, think of General Motors and Ford. It's a great time to buy a home in Bend, Ore., a popular resort and retirement community. The median home price peaked at $396,000 in May of 2007 and earlier this year hit a low of $270,000. Now the median price, at $315,000, is still a bargain. Interest rates also have been fairly low and buyers have a huge selection, says Tom Greene, president of the Central Oregon Association of Realtors.

The number of new homes built this year will be under half that promised by Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the House Builders Association has said. The body says only 110,000 are likely to be built by end of this year, far short of Mr Brown's target of 240,000. That could fall to just 80,000 in 2009. The association said the construction industry was facing its toughest time since the 1930s.
